Critical Role Season Four Reveals the Warriors Table

From the very beginning of the fourth campaign, new Dungeon Master Brennan Lee Mulligan has kept viewers on edge with deep backstory, a wide array of characters, and a exciting storyline featuring celestial beings, demons, and malevolent powers increasing in influence within the urban setting.

Note: Spoilers for Episode 3 of this adventure are included.

The Combat-Oriented Party Unveiled

The latest chapter finished on a major cliffhanger and introduced the initial group of heroes who will split off from the central cast to undertake their independent quest, apart from the additional parties.

This warrior group consists of Teor (played by Travis), the agile character (Laura), the fierce warrior (the cast member), Wicander Halovar (the player), and Kattigan (Robbie Daymond).

Why Split the Party?

Given 13 cast members, it was clear from the beginning that maintaining everyone at one table would be unfeasible.

That’s why, the first four episodes of the new season serve as an Introduction, connecting the personal journeys before branching into three distinct groups: Fighters, Strategists, and Questers.

Characteristics of the Combat Party

As described by the Dungeon Master, the Soldiers table is for participants who enjoy a classically intense combat and conflict-driven gameplay experience where peaceful solutions are rare.

Initially, characters like the reluctant priest Wicander might look mismatched, but the actions of episode 3 demonstrate why these specific adventurers are perfectly fit for the warrior group.

Reasons to Leave

To begin with, the party knows exactly where to head next after a violent initial meeting with The Crow Keepers.

A former ally of Thjazi—whose demise initiated the narrative’s action—exploited The Crow Keepers for his selfish purposes, breaking into the hidden lair, striking Thimble, and taking all the enchanted items to auction.

The antagonist then settled his obligations and fled to a Halovar stronghouse in the northern region, above Dol-Makjar, with Cyd Pridesire hot on his heels.

Individual Reasons

Moreover, each character has a individual motive to depart Dol-Makjar:

  • The rogue, as Thjazi’s partner and trusted friend, seeks revenge.
  • The knowledgeable figure knows Timmony and advises that it is a hostile location.
  • The warrior and Wicander, having defied his family’s wishes to kill the fighter and instead freed him, have no other options.
  • Yet, their position as important members in House Halovar could enable the party reach places they usually can’t.
  • Additionally, Teor vowed a life debt to The cleric for his salvation and will now accompany him everywhere.

Pursued by Authorities

Lastly, all of them are wanted by the powers that control the city for a range of causes, making staying in the city too risky:

  • Thimble and Kattigan are recognized lawbreakers.
  • Tyranny and Wicander defied House Halovar and the army of fiends they are allied with.
  • The fighter is marked for death by the clan.

This results in them few options but to journey toward the remote area in pursuit of the antagonist.

Future Episodes

From episode three’s post-show segment, we find out that the Soldiers table will be absent the following episode, leaving the rest of the participants to form the Explorers and Planners groups.

Audiences can expect finding out which adventurers will be assigned to which table in the season’s last Overture episode, streaming live on next week.
