The artist contributes his £25k prize cash award to independent music venues

Sam Fender received the prestigious award last month in Newcastle

The artist has handed over the full amount of his twenty-five thousand pound award prize money to the Music Venues Trust, which operates to protect the Britain's grassroots live music spots.

Fender was awarded the cheque on October 16 as his third album the album was chosen as the outstanding release of the past year.

Fender has opted to hand the money over to the Music Venues Trust, in recognition of the essential function small stages played in his early career.

"As an artist couldn't be pursuing my current career if it weren't for all the shows I played around the region, and elsewhere, when I was just getting going," remarked the artist. "These venues are legendary, but they are in difficulty."

Beginning in 2023, at least 150 of these spaces have ceased operations – about one-sixth of the whole industry in the UK.

Recently, well-known musicians like the band Pulp, Coldplay, Katy Perry and Ed Sheeran have all supported the trust in its initiatives to keep the scene afloat, by including a modest fee to their ticket costs, which benefits independent venues.

He also participated, raising over £100k on his recent tour to assist numerous local spots across the UK.

The money assisted venues that were confronting imminent closure due to difficulties caused by flooding, blazes and family tragedies, as well as regulatory hurdles, legal disputes and neighbor objections.

Additional spaces were granted funding support in improving amenities and sound and lighting systems that positively impacted artists and audiences.

"The idea that money from performances in large arenas backs the smaller venues, where it all starts for artists like me, is just common sense," Fender has said.

The musician is among several artists to give his award prize money to worthy causes.

In Pulp received the prize in the year 1996 for their record Different Class, lead singer Cocker declared that the act would contribute their cash to the non-profit the charity.

That year, rapper and singer Ms Dynamite shared her award across multiple charities, such as the children's charity and a Sickle Cell charity.

"And I gave a grand to Highgate Newtown, to their gymnastics program, because I practiced gymnastics when I was growing up and they required better apparatus," she shared with a publication.

Previously, they donated their prize money to the youth organization that nurtured their band, in addition to other independent music bodies.

Also the 1994 recipients M People contributed their award to a charity for MS after a friend was identified with the illness.

"Receiving the award was sufficient," stated singer Small. "The prize was the bonus but we didn't need the cherry, because we had the main prize. So our success impacted another person's life."

In the past week, the MVT revealed it had protected several grassroots venues in the South East, by bringing them into public stewardship.

One venue in the city and The Croft in Bristol were purchased under the public acquisition program, which is supported by a national body and enthusiasts who acquire "shares" in the properties.
