Users Discontinuing Slimming Injections Regain Weight Far More Rapidly Compared to Dieters

Weight management often requires ongoing approaches.

A recent study indicates that individuals who discontinue popular GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain lost weight far faster than those who end conventional diet and exercise regimens.

Findings released in a major medical journal shows that while obese people can lose substantial amounts of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"People purchasing these drugs should be aware of the danger of fast rebound weight gain when the treatment concludes," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain suggests a return to pre-treatment weight in about a year and a half.

Analyzing Approaches

The research, which reviewed 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the outcomes of these new drugs with other pills.

Scientists emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through dieting typically have a less rapid weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

The Reason for the Fast Rebound

Experts propose the mechanism of the jabs accounts for the accelerated regain.

GLP-1 drugs copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 levels far above than normal might result in the system to produce less of its own natural hormone, and may also diminish responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' means appetite is uncontrolled, making overeating far more likely."

A Lifelong Issue?

Medical guidelines advise the injections for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals contend that, given the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy is often ongoing.

This view is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "emphasize the persistent nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like hypertension.

Patient Experiences

Individuals who have discontinued the jabs report a sudden resurgence of hunger.

"It was like a trigger activating and I was suddenly starving," said one woman.

This difficulty is compounded if users have not adopted sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.

Significant Use

Recent estimates suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest being substantial.

  • Adoption is higher among females than males.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest level of interest.
  • Many access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Finally, experts emphasize that while these medications are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone cure and lasting health benefits hinges on integrated lifestyle changes.
